Suke Quto, Ethiopia

$26.00

Produced by Tesfaye Bekele in Ethiopia, this coffee has quite the story. The Suke Quto farm is the first of the coffee farms in the Guji region of Ethiopia, established in 2000 as part of Tesfaye’s initiative to restore and preserve the forests in the area. Working with the Natural Resource and Environmental Protection organization, Tesfaye started the Suke Quto farm and mill project to show how coffee farms could rejuvenate the environment and create beneficial diversification, following a series of bushfires that devastated the region, destroying 5000 acres of forest.

Tesfaye keeps the farm soil fertile through organic litterfall recycling; all Suke Quto coffees are Organic and Rainforest Alliance certified. Now, the Suke Quto farm has become a model for many other coffee farms in Guji, transforming the environment and producing economic development for the local community. Tesfaye focuses on sustainable coffee production and community support, exemplified in his partnership with Trabocca importers, through which he has created the Suke Quto community project. One of their most notable initiatives has been improvements made to local schools, allowing them to accept more students and provide greater access to education throughout the region.

As for the taste of this coffee — we can’t get enough. Bold stonefruit notes are balanced with a light tea-like and floral body. This is a fantastic example of how complex and memorable a washed Suke coffee can be.
